Workplace Risk
Assessment
Course Aim
To increase the awareness and knowledge of delegates of the legal
requirement for workplace risk assessments and to demonstrate a
practical risk assessment methodology.
Course objectives
By the end of this training programme, delegates will be able to;
(1) State the key piece of legislation behind workplace risk assessment.
(2) Identify other legislation requiring specific risk assessment
to be completed.
(3) State the key motivators for avoiding accidents at work.
(4) State the responsibilities of the employer and employee with
regard to health and safety.
(5) Identify five features common to virtually all hazards.
(6) Identify why human factors is a major cause of errors being
made.
(7) Define the terms accident, hazard and risk
(8) Explain why people have different perceptions of risk.
(9) Describe the basic five steps involved in risk assessment.
(10) Describe the hierachy of risk controls.
Course Content
0900 Introductions and domestic arrangements. Course aims and objectives.
Definitions. Motivators to avoid accidents. Legal framework for
risk assessment. General duties under the Health and Safety at Work
Act 1974.
Specific employee responsibilities under the Management of Health
and Safety at Work Regulations. Hazard identification. Causes of
accidents.

1045 Perceptions of risk. Tolerability of risk. Relationship between
risk, likelihood and consequence. Risk assessment exercise.
1230 * Lunch *
1300 Risk assessment syndicate exercise 1, exercise feedback. Control
measures and hierarchy of risk controls. Syndicate exercise 2 and
feedback.
1500 * Coffee *
1515 Syndicate exercise 2 and feedback cont. Five steps to risk
assessment. Review of all course objectives.
1630 Course assessment.
1700 Course feedback and close.
